Detroit Bird Alliance seeks individuals to serve on our board of directors.

The board is responsible for strategy, oversight, and accountability of the organization. Desired skill sets include legal, finance, digital marketing, human resources and environmental science. While representing diverse backgrounds and skill sets, the board collectively shares a commitment to the Detroit Bird Alliance mission and an appreciation for the conservation of birds and the environment we share.

Board Member Roles & Responsibilities

The role of each board member is to participate as part of the larger board to accomplish the mission of the organization.

Board members: 

  • Provide advice, expertise, and assistance in developing, implementing, and leading organizational vision and strategies. 

  • Are advocates to the community and constituents for programs and board decisions Play a consultative role by sharing expertise with management when requested

Election

Prospective board members submit an application. The Board's nominating committee puts forth candidates to be voted on by the membership of Detroit Bird Alliance in the annual general election. 

Authority

Individual Detroit Bird Alliance board members have no power except that granted by the full board through the bylaws, board policies or by resolution of the full board. All power of the board is a joint and collective power that exists only when the board is acting together as one body.

Meetings

Board meetings are held monthly, typically on the second Monday of the month, starting at 7 p.m. and lasting 1.5 - 2 hours. Most are held via the internet, with occasional in-person meetings. Because input from every board member is valued when making important decisions, it is expected that board members attend all meetings, absent unusual circumstances.

All board members should serve on at least one board committee. Committee meetings vary from monthly to quarterly (depending on the committee), meet via the internet and are generally 1 - 1.5 hours in duration.

Responsibilities

As laid out in the Detroit Bird Alliance bylaws (Section 4.2 Director Qualifications and Duties), each director will:

  • Be a member in good standing of the Corporation

  • Annually review and sign a Conflict of Interest agreement

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding the internal operations and financial data of the Corporation

  • Be able to communicate in a timely manner by digital means, such as email, online

  • documents, and synchronous (Zoom/Teams) remote meetings

  • Participate in on-boarding for new directors, as well as other board development Prepare for and attend board meetings

  • Contribute additional hours beyond board meetings

  • Make a financial contribution that is meaningful to the board member

  • Annually review and sign the Director's Agreement

Board members will regularly self-evaluate personal performance on the board and determine needs for improvement. A director should resign from the board when unable to perform these duties, support the mission, or devote the necessary time to be a good member.
