Reducing Bird Window Collisions Starts at Home

Windows are one of the largest threats to birds. Half of all bird window collisions happen at home.

What You Can Do:

Birds don’t see glass. They see reflections of sky and trees as a continuation of their habitat. Make your windows more visible to birds with:

  • exterior window screens

  • decals placed on the outside of windows, spaced no more than two inches apart

  • window coverings, shutters or blinds

Not all windows pose a problem. High-risk windows are usually larger and have nearby vegetation that attracts birds. Be sure bird feeders are placed away from windows.

What We Do:

Because of Detroit’s unique location where two North American migratory flyways converge, we have an obligation to make sure birds have a safe and successful journey. Detroit Bird Alliance’s Bird-Safe Buildings program works with lawmakers, building owners, and developers to secure a safer built environment for birds.
