Safer Windows for Birds on WSU Campus
In the fall of 2023, DBA installed CollidEscape window film at Wayne State University in partnership with Detroit Zoological Society. Through several years of bird collision monitoring, we found that this corridor of the Law Building was a hot spot for bird-window collisions. We prioritized covering all the first-floor windows in the corridor.
After the CollidEscape was installed, the bird-window collisions dropped significantly. However, as we continued to monitor the area, we found there was still a section where birds continued to strike the windows. The birds were still striking the second and third floors that weren’t covered. So, we rented a lift and covered the remaining second and third floors with CollidEscape. We expect that with this additional coverage we will have zero bird-window collisions in this corridor.
We are so grateful for our partnership with Wayne State University and Detroit Zoological Society that allows us to do this valuable work. Now that this corridor is safe for birds we can look at which other buildings have windows that need to be made bird-safe.
Bird collisions don’t just happen at large buildings. They can happen at your home. Learn how to make your home windows more bird-safe, how to report bird collisions, and how Detroit Bird Alliance is raising awareness in the community. Learn more here.
